UNESCO Institute for Lifelong Learning highlights the importance of incorporating basic literacy skills in adult education programmes.
Basic skills play a significant role in ensuring a person’s ability to participate in life of society. Although significant progress has been made on the way to mass literacy, there are still around 900 million adults and young people in the world who lack basic reading, writing and numeracy skills. In this sense, adult education programmes may become one of the tools to tackle this challenge – provided that they integrate basic literacy, life and vocational skills that can help learners improve their employment prospects. In 2021, the UNESCO Institute for Lifelong Learning published a report “𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗴𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗮𝗰𝗵𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗹𝗶𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘆 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘀𝗸𝗶𝗹𝗹𝘀 𝗱𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹𝗼𝗽𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁: 𝗘𝘅𝗮𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗲𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗯𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗽𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝗮𝗱𝘂𝗹𝘁 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗴𝗿𝗮𝗺𝗺𝗲𝘀”. The report highlights the importance of incorporating basic skills in adult education programmes to make such programmes more attractive, as they enable learners improve their personal and professional lives. The report provides 21 examples of adult education programmes using integrated approach to literacy – these come from all over the world, from Africa to Latin America and the Caribbean.
